Managing access
Public access is at the very heart of our national parks. In England national parks came into being because the nation needs beautiful and wild country where the characteristic landscapes can be conserved.
National parks provide recreation and facilities for the public to enjoy the open air in a peaceful setting.
We aim to enable as wide a range of people as possible to enjoy the special qualities of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and to involve local communities, landowners and users in this work. We need to make sure that access and recreation do not damage what people come to enjoy and to encourage people to act responsibly in the countryside.
Further details of our aims are available in the National Park Authority's Recreation Charter.
With over 400 square miles (over 1,000 square kilometres) of Open Access land and around 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometres) of public rights of way within the National Park, there are many opportunities for the public to explore and enjoy the countryside.
