National Park policies

The long-term ambitions for the Yorkshire Dales National Park are set out in the seven 'aims' of the National Park Management Plan - The Yorkshire Dales: Today and Tomorrow 2007- 2012. These aims cover both statutory purposes as well as social and economic issues. The aims are broad and are supported by more specific ambitions in the form of a series of ‘objectives’.

The Management Plan provides the overall framework to guide the actions of all the bodies working in the National Park including the Authority. It is supported by a number of more detailed strategies for particular aspects of the National Park, for example: biodiversity; historic environment; woodland; integrated access; education; and interpretation.

The aims of the Management Plan are carried through into specific objectives and actions for the Authority in our annually published Corporate Plan. It explains in detail the role of the Authority, setting out what we are trying to achieve and outlines our performance over the past 12 months while also showing what we intend to do in the year ahead.

These ambitions for the National Park are based on a good understanding of local conditions. As part of monitoring progress on the National Park Management Plan, a range of key indicators have been identified. Collectively, these indicators paint a picture of the current State of the Park and show changes over the last 10 years.
