Although not in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this small market town (market day on Tuesday) forms a natural gateway into Wensleydale.
A rather special feature is the village pump on Wycar Green with its stone shelter. There is a small village museum, and a good range of local shops, inns and cafés. The recently re-opened station on the Wensleydale Railway offers a regular service of trains to Leyburn and Redmire.
Thorp Perrow Arboretum, three miles from Bedale, is one of Britain’s finest private collections of trees. Its 85 acres are home to a whole range of rare trees and shrubs, gardens, a falconry and a visitor centre and café.
Bus times can be checked at the Transport Direct website.
