Masham boasts the largest village square in the Yorkshire Dales. It’s a relic from the 18th and early 19th centuries when Masham hosted some of the largest sheep and cattle fairs in the North. Today there are still popular markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and the village now hosts a number of interesting craft shops, as well as a fine medieval church with some rare Anglo-Saxon crosses.
Another claim to fame is in brewing. Today there are two well-known breweries in the town – the Black Sheep and Theakstons. Both have excellent visitor centres which explain the brewing process and offer beer tasting.
Masham is a good base from which to explore both Lower Wensleydale and the edge of Colsterdale. There are attractive low level walks down to Hackfall Woods and across towards Ilton Crags and Temple and Leighton Reservoir.
Bus times can be checked on the Dalesbus website.
