Everyone has something they treasure and that is special to them. The Dales Countryside Museum’s Treasured Possessions project is collecting stories and photos of things that are special to the people and communities linked with the Yorkshire Dales.
A treasured possession -a trustworthy tractor
Some things are precious because they are rare, created by someone famous or are worth a lot of money. Other treasured things might include a teddy, tool, recipe, story, photo, way of doing something or a tradition. They might be special because they have personal meaning, historic significance or because they are important to you now, at a particular time in your life.
Please let us know what things are special to you. Do you have any stories about them? How did they become precious to you? Does your special thing have links to something like a local custom or family tradition, or has it come from outside the area?
A treasured possession - DCM's Viking ring
Schools in the Dales have been thinking about what's special to them, what things might become treasured possession in the 23rd century and what the Dales Countryside Museum should collect today to save for future generations. They've been choosing the things they think are special in the Museum, interviewing their families about the things that are special to them and creating digi-stories that will be on display in the Treasured Possessions Exhibition.
Recording a favourite objectusing the Play Station Portable
With the support of the Yorkshire and Humber Grid for Learning we have also been working with Hawes Primary School. The children are helping to create a virtual map of the Museum showing their favourite objects from our collection. Using Sony Play Station Portable 2 (PSP2) machines and a computer software programme, barcodes or markers containing the children's research, stories, photographs and drawings give the user of the PSP2 a "virtual museum visit" from the perspective of the 7-11 year olds. We are hoping to eventually be able to use this PSP2 project within the Museum to add sound and visual information in the galleries.
